Transnistria / Pridnestrovie in their own words: Transcripts from transnistrian radio news casts:

What is Pridnestrovie
* The News, 27th November 2006. Read by Andrey Smolensky. Minister of Information Antiufeev
has declared in an interview: Our republic has been created according to the will of the people, who voted for autonomy within the Moldavian Socialist Soviet Republic. Following the annihilation of the Soviet Union we voted for a totally independent state independent from Moldova. In September we celebrated victory for democracy in Pridnestrovie. The people’s will was as follows: 97 percent of all Pridnestrovians voted for independence of the Republic and for free integration into Russia. Our ethnical und religious politicians have respected the interests of all nations and religious groups from the beginning. In the first days of existence, Pridnestrovie has introduced three national languages. We have protected our independence with weapons in our hand but we did not
allow ethnical or religious cleansings to happen. Today we are a valid state, which guarantees its own independence alone, without political, military or economic protective powers.

The founding of the PMR

* The News, 6th December 2006. Read by Andrey Smolensky. It was clearly a unique event in European
history when, at the end of the 20th century, our republic was announced according to the free will of the citizens. The Second Assembly adopted the declaration of the establishment of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Socialist Soviet Republic on 2nd September 1990. The document, which took a historical perspective to justify the adoption, also determined the territory and boundaries of the new republic. The creation of this new sovereign republic within the Soviet Union was solemnly announced. Tiraspol became the capital city of the new republic.
The declaration determined the structure of the legislative powers. The Supreme Soviet was made up of two chambers, the Council of the Republic and the Council of the Nationalities. The laws of Soviet Union (then still in existence) were put in place alongside the laws of the new republic. The declaration guaranteed free development for all national cultures and an equal coexistence for the three languages: Moldovan, Ukrainian, Russian. The document stressed that the power in the republic belongs to the people. All political parties, public institutions and movements, as well as the citizens of the PMSSR, all bear the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities. All citizens are equal before the law.
